Good day everyone,
My previous
blog article on Yakub’s hanging did stir interest in some and some did respond
to me (some even called me crazy for supporting a terrorist). Well today, I
would like to express my views and discuss about an event that scrambled the cricket
world. Not IPL but the scam that surrounded IPL for two years and almost killed
it, until a week back, when the verdict was passed favoring the cricketers in
the scam but not to two beloved teams. So, what happened really?
Cricket is a popular game and IPL has made it a craze and cause
of obsession to idiot boxes in India. Why because, every state has its own team
and a big management behind it. The management places bids for players across
the world in an auction. The players play and a team wins (obviously). The
media people earn from advertisements and TRP ratings. The management, where do
they get money? When we raise this question, we are surrounded by answers that
hangs loose in the air.
The answers are simple. They get sponsors and they get money
from other sources. Other sources? Betting!!! Betting that made Sreeshanth,
Vindoo Dara Singh, Raj Kundra (RR) and Gurunath Meyyapan(CSK) infamous and left
the ex BCCI president and current ICC chairman N.Sreenivasan in muddy waters (
poor guy got himself in these problem because of his son in law, Gurunath
Meyyapan).
Betting is considered a crime in India for reasons that aren’t
obvious. In UK, the gambling industry contributes around 3 billion pounds (30,000
crores) and 100000 jobs as of today. In a place like India, where alcohol and
tobacco are legal and government run, why not betting then? I believe that the
people of India are sensible (or they say they are) and sensible enough to
decide what is good or bad. Then, why shouldn’t betting be made legal and regulated
(most important…REGULATED)?
Today, as a person born at God’s Own Country and brought up
in the Land of Temples, I feel both happiness and sadness in me confluent at
this point. Happy, because Sreeshanth was found innocent (who in the meantime,
had taken up acting profession and has improved in that field because his
acting was superb in the press meet held after the judgment) and sad cause CSK
was banned. Needless to say, Rajasthan Royals was also banned. Above all, the
image of the famous seasonal game IPL tarnished and breathing its last (I guess).
I don’t think the game would be the same without these teams or with the scam clouds
looming large over it. If betting would have been legal, wouldn’t the scenario
ne entirely different today?

INDIA?
